Did Spendry and Andy MacPhailure really think that Rusch and Williams were going to pitch well? Or would even be consistent. OK, that’s not fair. They were consistently awful. I’ll give them that.
Think how lucky we are that Greg Auto-Maddux-for-the-People hired a personal trainer over the off-season and re-dedicated himself to his craft. Thank God he started off 5-0.
And I’ll give Spendry and his scouts credit for thinking the Sean Marshall plan would work. But Dusty deserves some of the credit for that. He had input. Memo to Carlos Soprano: Marshall’s doing well for one simple reason. He actually seeks Maddux out for advice and consultation. Why don’t you try that sometime instead of focusing all your energy on showing up your teammates and scapegoating their mistakes for your awful season. Where’s all that talk about winning the Cy Young now? Braggarts are always insufferable, but especially so when they can’t even back it up. Maybe Carlos Soprano should try some of Scott Eyre’s ritalin.
Rogers also argues that they should bring up minor-league phenom Felix Pie to help shake the team out of its doldrums. Put Matt Murton or Jacque Jones at first base, he says.
Not bad. I can get with that. I think Murton, who has made strides in left field, could handle first base. And an outfield with the outstanding defense and speed of Pie, Juan Pierre and Jones would save a lot of runs.
It’s clear Jerry Not-so-Fairston isn’t the answer. I like keeping Hot Todd Walker at first base. Hairston’s awful. Especially awful in the clutch. Before he rapped out a couple of hits Sunday he was 1-10.
How’s Felix PA doing with the Iowa Cubs? He’s batting .292 in 106 at-bats. His on-base-percentage is .353. He’s rapped out six doubles, four triples and 1 dinger, but he’s had 20 K’s hung on him.
Not bad. He’s not setting the world on fire, but it sounds as if he’s a winner, someone with the sort of electric charisma that could jolt this team into contention. The only thing really holding him back is the lack of a vacancy in the outfield and the front-office brass wants him playing everyday, not sitting on the major-league bench. OK, so is that Dusty’s fault? Nope, pin that one on Spendry who lavished Jones with a 3-year-contract.
Did you hear how former Cubs number 1 pick Bobby Brownlie was demoted from Iowa to Double-A? Yep. Remember the long, protracted negotiation with that bum? Another first-round bust. Remember Luis Montanez, the next A-Rod? Yeah, right. He’s moved from shortstop to outfield and he’s finally made it to West Tennessee. The 2000 first-round pick is batting .320 for the AA team. Too bad for him there’s no room in the bigs for him either. (Um, I’m being sarcastic there. He’s another in a long line of bums).
Everyone’s ridiculing Dusty for saying he needs a left-handed BP pitcher. Before you jump on that bandwagon, keep in mind everyone’s favorite baseball genius these days — Ozzie Guillen — said Dusty’s right.
Maybe the Cubs got it wrong when they decided to re-up Spendry’s contract and leave Dusty out there to be the scapegoat.
Or maybe that was Andy the Clown’s plan all along.
